Why does blood, which SYMBOLIZES life, have to LITERALLY atone for sin? Isn't that superstitious nonsense?

Sure, it might symbolically count for something, but only that. If you're talking about literally removing or cleansing sins by sacrificing an animal, or literally making a person go to a different place when they die (heaven instead of hell) based on a symbolic sacrifice of a human, isn't that crazy?
