Is there something psychologically wrong with my father?

I am afraid there is something wrong with my father. We are of Latin American descent and he is very superstitious. He is getting older and is acting more and more out of character. He can be like a short fuse one day and then ATTEMPT to be nice the next. Another thing that is really worrying me is his increased fear and paranoia. What could this be?
