Are the modern day Israelis/Hebrews descendant of those who created the bible?

I mean, I find it hard to believe that the modern day Israelis, who are hard working and have degrees in science and technology, to be descendants of those superstitious and barbarians who wrote the Old Testament - which has more violent content than the Quran.
